Guru Gobind Singh and the sacrifice of his four sons

In the history of Sikhism, the name of Guru Gobind Singh Ji is a symbol of immense sacrifice, bravery, and devotion to faith. During the period of Mughal oppression, he not only sacrificed himself but also offered his four sons for the sake of his religion—an event considered one of the greatest sacrifices in the history of humanity.

Names and information about the four Sahibzadas:

1. Sahibzada Ajit Singh

  • Born: February 11, 1687
  • Age: 18 years
  • Died: December 7, 1704 (age 17)
  • Family Background: Eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh.
  • Bravery: Ajit Singh was very courageous and brave.

Important Event:

In 1704, he stood against the Mughal army in the Battle of Chamkaur. He attacked the enemy with his sword on the battlefield, where many were wounded and died heroically. Finally, he attained martyrdom on the battlefield.

Commemoration: His sacrifice is immortalized in Sikh history as an example of "immense bravery for the sake of righteousness."

2. Sahibzada Jujhar Singh

  • Born: March 14, 1691 Anandpur Sahib, Punjab
  • Died: December 23, 1704 (age 13)
  • Family Background: Younger brother of Ajit Singh.
  • Bravery: Despite his young age, he fought on the battlefield like a mature warrior.

Significant Event: He shocked the enemies with his swordsmanship and killed many of them. He attained martyrdom on the battlefield.

Legacy: His sacrifice inspires young Sikhs to stand up for their faith and courage.

  • Anandpur Sahib, India
  • Died: December 26, 1704 (age 9 years)Fatehgarh Sahib, India
  • Family Background: Younger brother of Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh.
  • Bravery: Unwavering faith in religion and truth despite his young age.
Significant Event:
The Mughals pressured him to convert to Islam in Sirhind. Zorawar Singh, disregarding his young age, refused to accept Islam. He was walled alive and killed.
Commemoration: An example of childlike bravery, unwavering faith for the sake of religion.

  • Died: December 12, 1705 (age 6 years), Fatehgarh Sahib India
  • Family Background: The youngest son of Guru Gobind Singh.
  • Bravery: Showed immense courage despite his very young age.
Significant Event:
While facing pressure to convert in Sirhind, Fateh Singh remained steadfast in his faith. Despite his young age, he was bricked alive.
Legacy: The image of his childlike bravery in the face of sacrifice is immortalized in Sikh history.

Even after the sacrifice of all four of his sons, Guru Gobind Singh did

चार मुए तो क्या हुआ, जीवत कई हजार” 
(What if four sons are gone? Thousands of Khalsa are still alive with me.)

Historical event – ​​Nanded, 1708

    Location: Nanded (Maharashtra) – Today's Takht Sri Hazur Sahib
📅 Time: October 1708, before the Guru's soul merged with the divine light.

  1. From Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Tegh Bahadur Guru, there were 9 human gurus. Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj was the tenth and last human guru. During that period, there was a possibility of division within the religion due to power struggles, dynastic succession, and disagreements. Therefore, the Guru made the historic decision to make knowledge itself the guru
  2. The installation of Guru Granth Sahib was performed by Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj, with the Panj Pyare and the Sikh congregation present before the Guru Granth Sahib
  3. It was the most extraordinary moment in history. Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj himself bowed before the Guru Granth Sahib 
Meaning: “Sab Sikhan ko hukm hai, Guru Manio Granth.”

The passing of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj (Merging with the Divine Light)

  Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj, the tenth guru of Sikhism, was a living symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the protection of righteousness. His entire life was spent in struggle against oppression. Despite enduring the sacrifice of his four sons, a life of exile, and his final struggle, he never abandoned the path of righteousness. The final phase of Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj's life was his merging with the divine light at Nanded, which is an extremely sacred and emotional chapter in Sikh history.

Wazir Khan's Conspiracy :- Wazir Khan, the Nawab of Sirhind, who had the young Sahibzadas ,ksburied alive in a wall, was a staunch enemy of Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj. He sent two Pathan assassins to Nanded to kill the Guru.

The horrific incident of the attack
📅 Time: In the year 1708, evening time
📍 Place: Nanded, the Guru's tent
Incident: The Guru was meditating alone when suddenly a Pathan launched a surprise attack with a dagger. Although the Guru was seriously injured, he bravely killed the assassin. The other Pathan fled.Treatment for Guruji began, and for a few days, the wound seemed to be healing. Guruji himself remained composed, but one day, while stringing a bow, the wound reopened, and the bleeding increased. Guruji realized that the time of his death was approaching.

Place: Nanded (Maharashtra)
This is not considered a death in Sikhism. 👉 It is called "Jyot Jyot Samavish"
Meaning, the Guru's divine light merged with the Supreme Being.

How was revenge finally taken for the Sahibzadas?
Baba Banda Singh Bahadur

After Guru Gobind Singh Ji's passing (1708),
he entrusted the responsibility to his most trusted Sikh, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur.
Original name: Lachman Das
Became Baba Banda Singh Bahadur after meeting Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave him: the Khalsa flag, a sword, and a decree.

Historic attack on Sirhind (1710)
📍 Location: Sirhind (Punjab)
📅 Year: 1710 CE
What happened? Baba Banda Singh Bahadur gathered the Sikh army and launched a fierce attack on Sirhind. The Mughal army suffered a crushing defeat.

The End of Wazir Khan :- The Real Revenge
Wazir Khan was killed in the Battle of Sirhind.
The same man who: had the younger Sahibzadas murdered and kept Mata Gujri in captivity. 👉 His death is considered the just revenge for the sacrifice of the four Sahibzadas.

“The injustice was huge, the pain was immense, but in the end the justice was done because of the sacrifice of the four Sahibs.”
